Dr. Mattson is a registered InfantSEE doctor with the American Optometric Association.  The InfantSEE Program was started in mid-2005 as a way to make sure that vision and eye care become part of infant wellness care to improve the child’s quality of life; this is done by early detection of risk factors that may jeopardize the child’s vision development, such as amblyopia or “lazy eye”.  InfantSEE doctors provide no-cost, comprehensive eye examinations to infants 12 months old and younger, regardless of the parent’s ability to pay for this assessment.

The best age to schedule these assessment is between 6 and 12 months of age.  The exam should be scheduled at a time when the child is alert and happy, such as after a nap or feeding.  Mom or Dad will be an active participant during the exam, so try to arrange for older children to stay at home for this visit.  The visit will take about 1 hour and your child’s eyes will be dilated.  Feel free to bring your child’s favorite toy as well as a bottle with you to the exam, as you will have time to feed your baby while their eyes are dilating.  For more information about the InfantSEE program, please visit www.infantsee.org or call our office at 853-2020 to set up your child’s evaluation today.

Children’s Vision

In addition to being an InfantSEE doctor, Dr. Mattson’s services include examinations for toddlers and young children.  In our office we have specialty equipment and tests for assessing the visual health of our youngest patients, and we do our best to make your child’s eye examination a fun experience for them.  Since 80% of learning is visual, and children often do not know if they are having trouble seeing, the American Optometric Association recommends a comprehensive eye exam on children at the following ages:

Before 12 months of age

At age 3

At age 5

At least every 2 years during school age (unless a problem exists).

Some symptoms your child may be experiencing if they have a vision problem are:

·        Frequent eye rubbing or headaches

·        The avoidance of near work

·        Frequently losing their place when reading or using a finger to keep their place when reading.

·        A head tilt or turn when doing school work.

·        Closing one eye when looking at objects.

When your child comes to our office for their eye examination, we will not only test their vision, but the way their eyes work together as a team, their visual-motor skills, and their eye tracking capabilities.  Developmental screening tests are also done on all children under 10 years old by the doctor.  Not all vision problems require glasses, however, for our younger patients that do need glasses, we have a special frame selection as well as affordable complete pair pricing on our children’s frames.
